F is for Family Gaming

This week is spring break for my wife and kids. They are all enjoying their spring break, though I believe they all wish the weather was a little nicer. I didn’t take this week off, and in hindsight I wish I would’ve taken some time off. Since I didn’t, I instead decided that each night we are going to play games together.

On Monday, we played Dungeons and Dragons (D&D 📖) with my son running the adventure from the 4th Edition Red Box. I’m playing a dwarf wizard, my daughter a human cleric, my step-daughter a human rogue, and my son a dwarf fighter. The adventure is a rather straight-forward dungeon delve, but it’s good stuff for all of us to enjoy.

Tuesday we had a surprise visit from my in-laws; They were originally planning to stop by but cancelled when my father in-law was notified of a possible jury duty on Wednesday. However, on Tuesday afternoon, they called the house saying that he was not needed for jury duty on Wednesday; They were wondering if we could stop by. The kids were surprised and pleased. We played a couple of quick rounds of golf (the card-game).

Wednesday, with some pleading that we “fight the chess piece battle”, we broke out the D&D adventure and continued into the 8×8 room in which we had to fight as chess pieces. It was interesting, and very gimmicky, much like D&D adventures of yesteryear.

Tonight, I think we’re going to try and destroy the One Ring or maybe save Camelot from certain destruction. It’s hard to say, but I’m certain that this evening will be a time to fully engage with my kids.
